Of course, Central Asia is the cradle of the genus Tulipa. Nevertheless, other regions of the world accommodate very interesting populations of tulips too. For example, with its 8400 km2 of mountain relief and its sweet Mediterranean climate, the island of Crete shelters 3 species of theSaxatilis section : Tulipa bakeri, Tulipa cretica and Tulipa saxatilis, and some representatives of the Australis section as Tulipa hageri.

The photos which Hans Olaf Aanensen entrusts us are very precious as they allow us to discover in the wild species tulips among the most cultivated in our gardens.
