It was often written that Tulipa borszczowii Regel (1868) is to Tulipa armena related. What an error! In fact, this plant is much closer for example to the french tulip of Agen (Tulipa agenensis) because of its belonging to the Tulipanum section.
In 1940, A. D. Hall already wroted it is nothing else that one form of Tulipa systola Stapf (1885), assertion confirmed in 1997 by L.W.D. Van Raamsdonk, W. Eikelboom, T. De Vries and T. P. Straathof in “The sytematique of the genus Tulipa L.”.
In 1934, Tulipa systola was for a second time described and Turrill names it Tulipa stapfii. However, its description being later that Stapf’s one, Tulipa stapfii should be only as a synonym used.

Tulipa borszczowii lives in the North of Turkmenistan, in the West of Uzbekistan and in the South-west of Kazakhstan, where Marit and Hans Olaf Aanensen could observe it :

"Tulipa borszczowii is a largely widespread species in the desert zone of Kazakhstan, from the Aral Sea to Kyzylorda. Its color is really variable; yellow, orange, red. In the desert zones, where it lives in company of savage graminaceous during its flowering period, this tulip seem to prefer the sandy or sandy argilo grounds. It has really long sheets, of equivalent length, sometimes longer, than the flower itself. Leaves bend towards the ground! We found this species along northern bank of the red lake of Kizikol which is located at 500 m above the sea level. Our photographs were taken on April 19-2005."
