In the desert and mountain landscapes of Uzbekistan 24 different species of tulips are growing. The variety of this species is inferior to the variety of wild tulip species growing on the huge territory of Kazakhstan where their numbers come to 34. Tulips distribution over Uzbekistan is unequal. Desert areas are inhabited by 4 species, sub mountain regions by 6-7 species, in the mountains 13- 15 species and in high mountains regions 4 species. Essential variety of the species is typical for mountain chain of Tien-Shan (Kuramin, Chatkal, Karjantau, Ugam, Pskem, Koksuy chains) and Pamir-Alay (Nurata, Turkestan, Zarafshan, Gissar chains and Kugitang, Baysun and Babatag) where the number of the species is same and equal to 8. Four species inhabit mountain chains of both systems.

Great contribution in studies of Central Asian tulips has been made by A.I.Vvedensky. The outstanding scientist described 12 new species of tulips and created one of the most well-known systems in the world – system of Tulipa genera
Studying of Uzbekistan wild tulips is associated with the name of Z.P. Botschantzeva. She devoted all her life to studying of this genus of plants. In 1962 the book by Z.P. Botschantzeva was published and this book titled Tulips was rich in material on Central Asian and Caucuses wild tulips. This remarkable work was reissued in 1981 in Holland. She has described 6 new tulip species from various regions of Central Asia. The follower of Z.P. Bochantzeva’s scientific heritage is A.Kh. Sharipov (Tashkent Botanical Garden) who is one of the most experienced experts in Uzbekistan tulips.

Deserts and semi-desert areas of Uzbekistan (500-600 m above sea level) are poor in tulips species. It seems that conditions of Kizilkum desert and Usturt are too harsh for such beautiful plants. However four species of plants are growing here: T. borszczowii Regel, T. lehmanniana Mercklin, T. sogdiana Bunge and T. buhseana Boiss. They create a miraculous and colourful spring landscape.

Two first species belong to Tulipa subgenus and they distinguish by bright colorific dye of the flower, uniflorousness and absence of indumentums in the base of stamina. It is difficult to differentiate these two species in natural conditions. But there are several features which help to distinguish T. borszczowii from T. lehmanniana.
The distinguishing feature is a spot on the floral envelope. Black-brownish spot of T. borszczowii is transparent on both sides of the floral envelope. Besides this species underground part covered by hairs is equal to overground part. The spot of T. lehmanniana is only on the inner side of the floral envelope and underground part of the plant is 1.5 times longer then overground part. The color of the flower has not essential value because yellow, orange and red flowers are common for both species. Besides, there are a lot of populations in nature where specimens of hybrid origin are often met.

The second group of desert tulips consists of Eriostemones subgenus representatives and they do not show polymorphic features. They can be distinguished from each other by some ecological features and appearance. T. sogdiana vegetates in sandy and clayly deserts. It differs from T. buhseana by very solid blackish-brown covers of the bulb, porcellaneous-white narrowing to the bases petals and always naked stamina. T. buhseana is usually found in the Kyzyl-Kum Mountains, fine breakstone and stone mountain slopes. It can also be found on skeletonless soil among sagebrushes. Specimens with more then 8 flowers can be met in the nature

Huge varieties of Uzbekistan tulips can be seen among grass and brush vegetations in the submountain regions (700-1200 m above sea level).

Special position belongs to T. greigii Regel which is widespread in sub-mountain regions in Western Tien-Shan (Tashkent viloyat). It is referred as the Tulips King due to the perfection of its flowers form. Its distinguished features are scyphiform flowers and violet spots and hatches on the surface of its leaves. It is substituted by T. micheliana Hoog in the southern viloyates of Uzbekistan and is also distinguished by violet spots

T. korolkovii Regel is considered as decorative species not less then others. It is mainly Pamir-Alay specie and vegetates in Turkestan, Nurata, Kugitan and Babatag chains. Due to its habitus, bright red color of the flower and two colors of the stamin filaments (black in the lower part and red – in the upper) it is easily distinguished from other species.

Another specie T. tubergeniana Hoog with bright red petals of the floral envelope and with abundantly webby bulb covers vegetates in the outlets of Kugitan chain’s variegated rocks. Huge sized flowers till 10 sm resemble T. greigii’s flowers.
